Amazon.com Product Description

The Alligator Lopper's wide 4-inch jaw capacity easily chews through small trunks and logs. |
Because the Alligator Lopper cuts side-to-side instead of up and down, the chain won't bury itself in the ground when the cut is completed -- saving wear and tear on the cutting surface. |
The Alligator Lopper's controlled, smooth cutting action makes clean-up from storms or simple pruning easy, safe, and fast. | Black & Decker's Power Saws -- Driven by Quality Black & Decker offers both cordless and electric chain saws, including the Alligator Lopper electric chain saw and 18-volt cordless chain saws. Chain saws feature powerful motors for fast cutting and a sturdy, lightweight design that makes them exceptionally easy to use. The Alligator Lopper Makes Cutting a Breeze Take a big bite out of fallen trees, tree limbs and brush with the Alligator Lopper -- a revolutionary cutting tool that provides chainsaw-like cutting performance in an un-intimidating tool. With its scissor-like action, the Alligator Lopper's rugged metal jaws clamp onto logs, thick branches, tree limbs, and vines -- and then saw right through them. Once limbs and branches are on the ground, the Alligator Lopper is perfect for chopping them up into manageable pieces to throw away or chuck into your fireplace. This amazing saw boasts a rugged 4.5 amp motor for fast, powerful chomping through wood -- plus a heavy-duty cutting bar and chain to really chew through dense branches and logs. This model also features auto chain tensioning to keep the tool in top cutting form. Just loosen the bar retainer bolts with the included wrench and the bar automatically takes out the slack and adjusts the chain's tension perfectly. The Alligator Lopper's jaws offer the ultimate in controlled cutting. The rugged metal guards that cover the jaws protect you from the cutting chain, and they immediately snap back over the blades once the cut is complete. The Alligator Lopper's jaws also mean that there's no skipping around at the start of a cut. Unlike traditional chainsaws, the lopper cuts side-to-side instead of from top to bottom. This sideways cutting action prevents the cutting chain from burying itself in the dirt as the chain completes its cut. The Alligator Lopper also makes it much faster and easier to cut logs, because you'll never need to prop them up on saw horses or on other any other brace. Just grab the logs in the Alligator Lopper's jaws and cut right through them. Key Technical Specs:

Great Purchase!!! July 11, 2010 F. X. Maloney (Catskill, NY United States) although there are tasks which only a chain saw can handle, the 'gator is a great at the most common ones a homeowner faces... particularly if the homeowner isn't too keen on storing gasoline in the garage and the inherent dangers of a regular chain saw!!! great for major pruning and clean up... it's a bit awkward when cutting on the horizontal plane because of its center of gravity, but still manageable... would highly recommend to those of us without lumberjack aspirations!!!
Awesome tool June 26, 2010 Don K. I was impressed with the number of good reviews on this product and I see why. I needed to cut down 125' of privet hedge. The Alligator made it a whiz. I popped the chain off a couple times until I got the hang of handling it. The chain was easily put back on. Never had the problem again. I would definitely recommend this item.
Excellent!!! June 23, 2010 Carrie (Oklahoma) I bought it for my husband on father's day based on the reviews. It was super easy for me to use and I love it! Lightweight, easy to use, gets a tough job done! I would easily buy it again!
Great saw; cuts down trees! June 20, 2010 ScrappingGirl (Fairfax County, VA) I could hardly wait to get this tool in the mail. I bought this great saw a year ago because I moved into a house that had 2 trees that were over grown in my front yard. The base of the trees were 6 inches in diameter and they both came down with ease. Then the alligator lopper chopped them up like butter. Since the instructions discourage cutting above your shoulders and I've been so happy wtih this product, I'm going to get the B&D Cordless Electric Pole Chain Saw to trim my last tree (tree trimmers wanted $400 to do it and that ain't gonna happen). I would definitely recommend this tool if you are looking for something easy to use, safe to use, and are weary about operating a saw. I now know why men like power tools so much...
With this and a hedge trimmer you can almost conquer the world June 20, 2010 Ancient Mariner (Shrewsbury, PA USA) I bought this last year at another retailer. I have found this to be one of the most useful outdoor tools I own. I have some areas of my property that I really haven't paid much attention to over the past few years, and they're now starting to get full of saplings and the like. I also have some trees that need pruning. The saw has done an excellent job with these. Its design also has some good safety features making me more comfortable working with it than with a small gas-powered chain saw.
This tool has done an excellent job of pruning tree limbs and removing 2"-4" saplings I've found on the property. When cutting, it operates best with only slight pressure. If you use too much pressure on the handles you'll hear the chain slow down, and you are will more likely than not bog down the tool. After hours of using this tool (and tightening the chain during the first 2 hours of use as instructed by the manual) I have yet to have the chain slip off the tool. Light and easy does it.
It does need to be oiled about every 10 minutes as the manual says. On the bottom side of the tool there's a small "pit" covered by a snap-on cap. Just drip the oil into that. Apparently some people think they have to force oil into the small rubber thing at the bottom of the "pit" and they end up closing the stopper on the oil bottle. Wrong thing to do. Just fill the oil "pit." Even though the tool is only about 6 pounds, I find stopping every few minutes to add oil to be a nice break of a minute or so. I've even found non-petroleum based oil at my home center.
The discharge port on the tool can clog up if you start trimming branches near their tips where leaf stems can get chewed up by the tool. The small stems will clog up the discharge port. But it's not difficult to clear them from the tool.
Obviously don't try to lop off a 6-foot limb all at once. Too much danger of it falling on you or jamming the saw. I prune limbs a couple of feet at a time. Ditto for taking down small trees. I cut off the limbs, then start by lopping off the trunk in sections. You can get just about down to ground level by turning the saw upside down.
The chain is not meant to be sharpened. The teeth don't seem to be thick enough for that. One of these days I'll have to look into buying a replacement chain, but for the moment it's still cutting well.
In summary - a nice tool that's obviously only good for a hundred or two hundred feet from an outlet. An engine on it would make it too heavy.
