4 out of 5 stars good third hand   July 6, 2010
J. Wilson (Waterloo, IA, US)
I give this 4 stars for the only flaw with this item, one i think that manufactures should already see, the base although over all good, would be even better if a little heavier. The spring could have been a little stiffer. With that said, the base has a hidden drawer in the back that is nice for the extra bits. The flex arms work great ( but remember not a great amount of weight can be held here due to base) The iron fits nice in hand and stays cool the indicator could be better not really a necessary item. I like this iron and if you need a good iron on your bench or need for your craft work I would not hesitate to buy this one the iron is sturdier than others regardless of the base. I feel B&D used good sense in the construction of this item even to putting a wet pad tray to clean tips right there on the base this is vary handy

I have a degree in electrical engineering, but since out of school, I haven't really needed to solder much of anything. But when the batteries started dying in my old Gameboy and Gameboy Advance games, I knew I'd need something for some simple, decent electrical work. I didn't want to toss down a hundred bucks on something I wouldn't use very frequently, so I purchased this and hoped for the best (in the face of all the reviews claiming that this can't do electrical work).

I couldn't be happier with this iron. It heats up really fast and easily gets hot enough to melt solder (I used American Terminal AT-31604 60-40 Rosin Core Solder in my video) without difficulty. The base is really nice - a good, strong hold, with an included sponge in the base, and some nice alligator clips that could be more flexible, but they get the basic job done. I've used this to successfully solder in new batteries for my Gameboy games, and I couldn't be happier.

I would guess that a more expensive iron with a finer tip would be a good investment if you were planning to use this every day, but if you just want something for once-a-year work, this will meet your needs without costing an arm and a leg.

4 out of 5 stars I bought this as a gift   May 23, 2010

This was a gift for my son-in-law. I am not sure that he has used it yet but seemed pleased with the purchase. He was excited that it solders both plastic and metal.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad for the money   March 11, 2010

I don't have a clue what the people are talking about that say this isn't good for electrical soldering. It does fine. 1st, let me start by saying that I am a retired electrician, also a former Aircraft electrician. I have extensive soldering skills both proffesionally as well as hobby. That said, this is no Weller, that's for sure. I bought it because my Weller bit the dust after over 20 years. I have had this iron, and use it VERY regularly for over a year now. I solder very small stuff in my N scale model railroading hobby. It does very well with a few exceptions. It really needs a more needle point for some of the small stuff I solder. It works, but would be much easier with some electrical soldering tip choices. The biggest problem I have with it, is it's non-standard soldering tips. It is a weird thread, that I have yet to find replacement tips for. If anyone knows where I can get replacement tips, that would be greatly appreciated. That, and the choice in tips for electrical soldering are my only complaints. Again, I solder with it ALLOT, and even though I don't love it like I did my Weller, it does work fine. When I burn the tip completely up, I will probably replace it with a Weller, but again, for the part time hobbyest, this iron works fine, and I would recommend it for the money. For the pro, not so much. What I would see the problem being with the folks that say it doesn't work for electrical soldering would not be the iron, but their own skills maybe. Or maybe they are doing bigger jobs. It may not have the power to solder 4 or 6 gauge lugs or something like that, but for small soldering jobs, it is more than enough.

5 out of 5 stars WOW it was great!   May 3, 2009

I have had this kit for a few months now and it is great! I so special soldering for wires and this item it great! The tips give me many options and the Soldering stand keeps me from accidental burning.

But i must say a con is that the wire always gets in the way. There should be a way to stop it because i have burned it a few times and now there is alot of electrical tape around those spots.
Besides that this item is great!
