Amazon.com Product Description Ideal for home or recreational use, the Fiskars hatchet with 14-inch handle features a tough, forged steel axe head. The one-piece handle is over molded around the head to prevent loosening and separation. The stay-sharp fully hardened blade comes with a non-stick coating that cuts with less effort and resists rust. The included fiberglass composite handle is lightweight and strong, and the hatchet includes a plastic sheath for easy transportation and safe storage.

A step backward in axe design July 13, 2010 D. Clark (Kent, OH) Back in the stone age, axes were made by lashing sharp rocks to sticks. Of course, in actually USING such tools, one quickly discovers that the lashings need to be redone fairly regularly, as they are abraded by the log you're trying to cut. The bronze and iron ages put holes in the head of the axe and fit handles into those holes. This protected the attachment point, helping to keep the axe head from separating from the axe handle. Refinements added additional protection for the axe handle where it was exposed to the log, or even solid axes, where the head and handle were one piece of steel.
Ignoring these "modern" developments, Fiskars wraps the handle around the head, reminiscent of the stone-age model. Like the stone-age axe, this modern fiberglass "lashing" gets beaten up with regular use, quickly destroying the axe. Oops.
That anyone could have anything good to say about this axe suggests that they either don't know how to use an axe properly or have never used this axe at all. It works a bit better than the $5 models you find in the camping aisle at a department store, but it's a disposable piece of trash, and it costs about as much as a nice axe.
For about the same price, you can pick up an Estwing hatchet that you'll be able to pass down to your grandkids.
Awesome hatchet July 8, 2010 Dustin Hill fantastic item. Incredibly light with great momentum for chopping. Great for backpacking or camping. Product came sharp but I still took it to a stone. Sharpened very easy, now holds a razors edge. I did hit a rock while chopping and put a nick in the blade. 5 min on a stone and it was as good as new.
Good stuff June 20, 2010 Matthew Taheri (Long Island, NY) Does the job and takes a beating. Just keep in mind that it is a lot smaller than some standard sized hatchets (blade profile especially). It would be even better for camp if it came with a sheath of any sort other than the cheap plastic housing it hangs on a shelf in.
Great little chopper May 24, 2010 Albert F. Hale Jr. This item is a high quality item and is perfect for camping or back pack trips. It is light wieght but delivers when put to use.
